Emails have been sent misusing the name of Travers Smith LLP in relation to a supposed Intellectual Property Rights Violation Notice.
What is the scam?
Emails have been sent misusing the name of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below) in relation to a supposed Intellectual Property Rights Violation Notice.
The email claims the recipient has infringed on a company's intellectual property. It requests that the recipient click a link labelled 'Download PDF Evidence' to see details of the apparent infringement. A concern is that the PDF document may contain malware.
The email was sent using an email address of 'noreply@appsheet.com'.
The email misuses a genuine email and telephone number of the genuine firm (see below) and also provides an address at '159 Collins Avenue Miami Beach FL33139'.
Any business or transaction through the email address noreply@appsheet.com is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a firm of solicitors called Travers Smith LLP. The Head Office is at 10 Snow Hill London EC1A 2AL. The genuine telephone number is 0207 295 3000 and the genuine email domain is @traverssmith.com.
The genuine Travers Smith LLP has confirmed that it has no connection to the emails referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
