Warning: Emails misusing the name of Charles Alexis Gorman

Emails regarding a supposed trademark application have been sent, misusing the name of Charles Alexis Gorman.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen emails that have been sent misusing the name of a genuine solicitor (please see genuine details below) and claiming to be from 'Charles Gorman Legal'.

The emails advise the recipient that the sender is assisting a third party with a trademark application for a company name used by the recipient. The email invites the recipient to secure trademark registration of the company name and logo and offers to assist with this process.

The email seen by the SRA misuses the name and SRA number of a genuine solicitor (details below) and was sent from the email address 'charles@charlesgormanlegal.com'. The emails also include the website address 'charlesgormanlegal.com'.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Charles Gorman Legal'.

Any business or transaction through the email address or website above is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorise and regulate a solicitor called Charles Alexis Gorman whose SRA number is 27285.

The genuine Charles Alexis Gorman has confirmed he has no connection with the emails, email address or website referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
