Warning: Website operating and claiming association with law firm and letter misusing the name of Crane & Staples LLP
9 July 2026
The website 'https://staplescrane.com/' is operating and falsely claiming to be associated with a law firm and a letter has been sent misusing the name of Crane & Staples LLP.
What is the scam?
The SRA has been informed that a website is operating and presenting itself as being associated with a law firm. The website address is 'https://staplescrane.com/'.
This bogus website provides an email address of 'b.davison@staplescrane.com' and includes the address 1 Angel Court, London EC2R 7HJ. The website also claims to be regulated by the SRA and quotes the SRA number '748291'.
The SRA has also seen a letter that has been sent to a member of the public in relation to a partnership agreement demanding payment. The letter misuses the name of a genuine firm (see below).
The letter is purported to have been sent by a 'B. Davison' claiming to be a 'Partner' at 'Staples Crane Solicitors LLP'. The letter provides a link to the website referred above and includes the same address referred to on the website above.
The SRA does not authorise or regulate an individual solicitor named 'B. Davison' or a firm named 'Staples Crane Solicitors LLP'.
Any business or transaction through the above contact details and website 'https://staplescrane.com/' is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.
Is there a genuine firm or person?
The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors by the name of Crane & Staples LLP (SRA number 656984). The genuine firm uses the email domain @crane-staples.co.uk and its head office address is Longcroft House, Fretherne Road, Welwyn Garden City, AL8 6TU.
The genuine firm Crane & Staples LLP has confirmed they have no connection to the letter or website referred to in the alert above.
The SRA also authorises and regulates a number of other law firms whose offices are at 1 Angel Court, London EC2R 7HJ, none of whom are believed to be connected with the emails referred to in the above alert.
What should I do?
When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
